4By David MacLean, Technology ProducerFake fingernails fitted with LEDs and a tiny antenna - causing them to light up when close to a smartphone - have been shown offby a Japanese toy maker.The stick-on nails use Near Field Connection (NFC) to detect signals from an NFC-enabledmobile device.The wearer can use a companion mobile app to choose which situations their nails will automatically light up, such as when the phone rings or when the battery is low.The nails are activated by the presence of an NFC smartphoneThe device operates without batteries or any other power source, and the technology was demonstrated at Takara Tomy’s exhibition in Tokyo.The nails go on sale in Japan on April 24 andwill cost 1,200 yen (£7) per set.A set of nails can by bought for the equivalent of £7Each set contains 16 stick-on nails, of which one is NFC and LED-enabled.While the nails have only cosmetic use, NFC is a useful technology.NFC-enabled phones can be used to make transactions and share data with nearby devices.
